Question 1 of 36

Fill in
Beetles After the Eruption

On a small island, a population of ground beetles includes both light-brown and dark-brown individuals. Shell color is inherited: parents pass it on to their offspring. Birds that hunt by sight are the beetles' main predators.

Before a volcano erupted, the island's ground was covered with light, sandy soil, and only about 10% of the beetles were dark. The eruption covered the ground with dark ash that stayed in place for many years. Scientists sampled the beetle population every five generations after the eruption and recorded the percentage of dark-colored beetles.

Line graph: percentage of dark-colored beetles in the population by generation after the eruption. Generation 0: 10%; generation 5: 20%; generation 10: 40%; generation 15: 70%; generation 20: 85%. 0 20 40 60 80 100 0 5 10 15 20 10% 20% 40% 70% 85% Generations after the eruption Dark-colored beetles (%)

According to the graph, by how many percentage points did the share of dark-colored beetles increase from generation 0 to generation 20?

percentage points

Type your answer in the box. Fractions like 3/4 are fine.

Hint

Read the value at generation 0 and the value at generation 20, then subtract.

Hint

Think of a body part that was useful to an organism's ancestors but has little or no use today.

Question 5 of 36

Beaks After a Drought

On a small island, a population of seed-eating birds called ground finches varies in beak depth (how tall the beak is from top to bottom). Beak depth is largely inherited: parents with deep beaks tend to have offspring with deep beaks. Birds with deeper beaks can crack larger, harder seeds.

One year, a severe drought struck the island. Plants that make small, soft seeds died back, and most of the food left was large, hard seeds. Many finches died during the drought. Researchers measured the beaks of the birds before the drought, of the birds that survived it, and of the offspring hatched the year after.

GroupAverage beak depth (mm)
Birds before the drought9.4
Birds that survived the drought9.9
Offspring hatched after the drought9.8

Why did the average beak depth of the finches increase after the drought?

Answer choices
Hint

Compare the birds before the drought with the birds that survived it. Which birds were more likely to make it through, and what did their offspring inherit?

Question 6 of 36

Fill in
Antibiotic Resistance in a Hospital

Staphylococcus aureus is a common bacterium that can cause skin and blood infections. In 2000, doctors at a large hospital began using a new antibiotic widely. Each year, the hospital lab tested samples of the bacterium taken from patients to find what percent could survive the antibiotic (were resistant).

Even before 2000, a few bacteria in the population carried a gene variant that let them survive the antibiotic. Resistance is inherited: when a resistant bacterium divides, both new cells are resistant. In 2014, the hospital started a program that cut the use of the antibiotic roughly in half.

Line graph: percentage of bacteria samples resistant to the antibiotic, by year. 2000: 5%; 2004: 10%; 2008: 22%; 2012: 38%; 2016: 46%; 2020: 48%. A dashed vertical line at 2014 is labeled 'program begins'. 0 10 20 30 40 50 60 2000 2004 2008 2012 2016 2020 5 10 22 38 46 48 2014: program begins Year Resistant samples (%)

Use the graph. From 2000 to 2012 the share of resistant samples went up. What was the size of this increase?

percentage points

Type your answer in the box. Fractions like 3/4 are fine.

Hint

Read the value for 2000 and the value for 2012, then subtract.

Question 7 of 36

A Vertebrate Cladogram

A cladogram is a branching diagram that shows how groups of organisms are related through common ancestors. Each branch point (node) represents the most recent common ancestor of all the organisms on the branches above it.

The marks on the main line show shared derived traits. A trait first appears at the point where it is marked, and it is shared by every organism whose branch splits off after (above) that point. Organisms that share a more recent common ancestor (a node closer to the top) are more closely related.

Cladogram of five animals. A main line rises from a common ancestor at the bottom left. Branches split off in this order: Lamprey first, then Shark, then Frog, then Lizard; the line ends at Mouse. Each branch point is marked with a dot. Traits marked on the main line: vertebral column (before the Lamprey branch, shared by all five), jaws (after Lamprey, before Shark; shared by Shark, Frog, Lizard, Mouse), four limbs (after Shark; shared by Frog, Lizard, Mouse), amniotic egg (after Frog; shared by Lizard and Mouse), hair (after Lizard; Mouse only). Lamprey Shark Frog Lizard Mouse Vertebral column Jaws Four limbs Amniotic egg Hair Common ancestor

According to the cladogram, which trait is shared by the frog, lizard and mouse but not by the shark?

Answer choices
Hint

A trait is shared by every organism whose branch splits off after the trait's mark. Which mark comes right after the shark's branch?

Question 8 of 36

A Vertebrate Cladogram

A cladogram is a branching diagram that shows how groups of organisms are related through common ancestors. Each branch point (node) represents the most recent common ancestor of all the organisms on the branches above it.

The marks on the main line show shared derived traits. A trait first appears at the point where it is marked, and it is shared by every organism whose branch splits off after (above) that point. Organisms that share a more recent common ancestor (a node closer to the top) are more closely related.

Lamprey Shark Frog Lizard Mouse Vertebral column Jaws Four limbs Amniotic egg Hair Common ancestor

According to the cladogram, which animal is most closely related to the lizard?

Answer choices
Hint

Relatedness depends on which pair shares the most recent common ancestor (the highest branch point), not on whose name is printed next to the lizard's.

Question 9 of 36

Fossil Horses

Fossils of horses and their ancestors have been found in rock layers in North America. Fossils from deeper rock layers are older. The table summarizes several fossil groups. Ages and sizes are approximate.

A paleontologist proposes this hypothesis: High-crowned teeth became common in horses because their ancestors began eating tough grasses as grasslands spread across North America.

Which additional finding would best support the paleontologist's hypothesis?

Answer choices
Hint

The hypothesis links two events: grasslands spreading and high-crowned teeth appearing. Which finding connects them in time?

Question 11 of 36

Comparing a Protein

Cytochrome c is a protein that helps release energy in the mitochondria of animals, plants and fungi. In humans it is a chain of 104 amino acids. Because the protein is built from instructions in DNA, scientists can compare its amino acid sequence in different species. Fewer differences suggest that two species share a more recent common ancestor.

The table shows the approximate number of amino acids in each species' cytochrome c that differ from the human sequence.

SpeciesAmino acid differences from humans
Chimpanzee0
Rhesus monkey1
Horse12
Chicken13
Tuna21
Baker's yeast44

Based on the data, which list orders the species from most closely to least closely related to humans?

Answer choices
Hint

Fewer amino acid differences mean a more recent common ancestor. Sort the species by their numbers, from smallest to largest.

Question 12 of 36

Drop-down
Lizards on Two Islands

Scientists are studying two populations of a small lizard that live on neighboring islands, Island A and Island B. Thousands of years ago, the islands were joined by a strip of land, and the lizards formed a single population. Then the sea level rose and covered the land bridge. The lizards cannot swim between the islands, so the two populations no longer mix.

Over many generations, the populations have changed in different ways. Island A is rocky, with few plants, and its lizards now have longer legs on average, which help them run quickly across open rock. Island B is covered with thin bushes, and its lizards have shorter legs on average, which help them grip narrow branches. Genetic tests show that the two populations descended from the same ancestral population.

The scientists want to know whether the two populations have now become separate species.

Select the words that correctly complete the scientists' summary.

The rising sea level that covered the land bridge is an example of . The difference in average leg length between the two populations most likely developed through . If lizards from the two islands can no longer produce fertile offspring together, the populations will be considered .

Choose an answer from each menu.

Hint

Think about the three stages of speciation: a barrier separates a population, the separated groups face different conditions, and eventually they can no longer interbreed.

Question 13 of 36

Select all
A Plant Cladogram

The cladogram shows how five kinds of plants and algae are related. Each branch point (node) represents the most recent common ancestor of all the organisms on the branches above it.

A mark on the main line shows where a trait first appeared. Every organism whose branch splits off above that mark has the trait.

Cladogram of five plants and algae. A main line rises from a common ancestor at the bottom left. Branches split off in this order: Green alga first, then Moss, then Fern, then Pine; the line ends at Sunflower. Each branch point is marked with a dot. Traits marked on the main line: embryo protected by parent (after the Green alga branch, before Moss; shared by Moss, Fern, Pine, Sunflower), vascular tissue (after Moss, before Fern; shared by Fern, Pine, Sunflower), seeds (after Fern, before Pine; shared by Pine and Sunflower), flowers (after Pine; Sunflower only). Green alga Moss Fern Pine Sunflower Embryo protected by parent Vascular tissue Seeds Flowers Common ancestor

According to the cladogram, which organisms have vascular tissue? Select all that apply.

Select all that apply.

Answer choices
Hint

Find the vascular tissue mark on the main line. Which branches split off above it?

Question 14 of 36

Same Bones, Different Jobs

The front limbs of many vertebrates do very different jobs. A human arm grasps tools, a cat's front leg walks and runs, a whale's flipper steers through water, and a bat's wing flies. Yet all four limbs contain the same set of bones in the same order: one upper-arm bone, two forearm bones, a group of wrist bones, and finger bones. Structures like these, which share the same basic plan because they were inherited from a common ancestor, are called homologous structures.

Other structures do the same job but are built in very different ways. A bird's wing is supported by bones and covered with feathers, while a butterfly's wing is a thin sheet with no bones at all. Such structures are called analogous structures. They evolved separately in groups that do not share a winged ancestor.

Based on the passage, which is the best explanation for why a bat's wing and a whale's flipper contain the same set of bones?

Answer choices
Hint

The two limbs do completely different jobs. So what, besides the job, could explain why they are built the same way?

Question 15 of 36

Drag and drop
Beaks After a Drought

On a small island, a population of seed-eating birds called ground finches varies in beak depth (how tall the beak is from top to bottom). Beak depth is largely inherited: parents with deep beaks tend to have offspring with deep beaks. Birds with deeper beaks can crack larger, harder seeds.

GroupAverage beak depth (mm)
Birds before the drought9.4
Birds that survived the drought9.9
Offspring hatched after the drought9.8

Put these events from the finch study in the order in which they happened as natural selection changed the population. Drag each statement into a box; one statement does not belong.

Step 1Step 2Step 3Step 4

Tap a tile, then tap a box to place it.

Hint

Selection can act only on differences that already exist. Then something in the environment must make some of those differences matter.

Question 16 of 36

From Wild Mustard to the Supermarket

Cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, kohlrabi and Brussels sprouts look very different, yet they all belong to the same species, Brassica oleracea. All of them were developed from a wild mustard plant that grows along the coasts of western Europe.

Over hundreds of years, farmers saved seeds only from the plants that had the traits they wanted and planted those seeds the next year. This process is called artificial selection, or selective breeding.

VegetableTrait farmers selected for
KaleLarge leaves
CabbageA large bud at the tip of the stem
Broccoli and cauliflowerThick clusters of flower buds
KohlrabiA swollen stem
Brussels sproutsMany buds along the side of the stem

How does the process described in the passage differ from natural selection?

Answer choices
Hint

In the passage, who decided which mustard plants would produce the next generation? In nature, what decides?

Question 17 of 36

Fossils in a Cliff

A geologist studied a cliff made of five layers of sedimentary rock. The layers have not been folded or overturned, so each layer is younger than the layers below it. A thin bed of volcanic ash lies between Layer 3 and Layer 4. Using radioactive dating, the geologist found that the ash is about 250 million years old.

LayerFossils found
5 (top)Mammal teeth and bones; pollen from flowering plants

Ash bed (between Layers 3 and 4)No fossils; about 250 million years old
3Amphibian bones; fern spores
2Jawed fish; shelled sea animals
1 (bottom)Trilobites (extinct sea animals); shelled sea animals

Based on the passage, which statement about the amphibian bones in Layer 3 is best supported?

Answer choices
Hint

Where is Layer 3 compared with the ash bed? Lower layers are older.

Which statement best explains the rise in resistant samples from 2000 to 2012?

Answer choices
Hint

The passage says something about the bacteria before 2000. Did the antibiotic create resistance, or did it change which bacteria survived?

Question 19 of 36

Beaks After a Drought

On a small island, a population of seed-eating birds called ground finches varies in beak depth (how tall the beak is from top to bottom). Beak depth is largely inherited: parents with deep beaks tend to have offspring with deep beaks. Birds with deeper beaks can crack larger, harder seeds.

GroupAverage beak depth (mm)
Birds before the drought9.4
Birds that survived the drought9.9
Offspring hatched after the drought9.8

A student writes: "During the drought, each finch grew a deeper beak because it needed to crack the hard seeds." Which statement best explains the error in the student's reasoning?

Answer choices
Hint

Look at the table: did the change show up because individual beaks grew, or because the mix of birds changed?

During which 4-year period did the percent of resistant samples increase the most?

Answer choices
Hint

Find the change for each period by subtracting the starting value from the ending value. The steepest part of the line has the biggest change.

Question 21 of 36

Comparing Primate DNA

Scientists compared long stretches of DNA from humans and several other primates. The table shows the approximate percent of DNA bases that differ between humans and each species.

After two groups split from a common ancestor, small changes build up in each group's DNA slowly and fairly steadily. So fewer differences suggest a more recent common ancestor.

SpeciesDNA difference from humans (%)
Chimpanzee1.2
Gorilla1.6
Orangutan3.1
Rhesus macaque (a monkey)7.0

What do the DNA comparisons in the table best support about how humans are related to the other primates?

Answer choices
Hint

Fewer DNA differences mean a more recent common ancestor. Check that each choice uses only comparisons with humans, since that is all the table gives.

A student looks at the table and concludes: "Tuna evolved into chickens, and chickens then evolved into horses, because the number of differences from humans gets smaller from tuna to chicken to horse." Which statement best evaluates the student's conclusion?

Answer choices
Hint

The table compares each living species with humans. Does it show one living species turning into another, or does it show how recently species share ancestors?

Tap a tile, then tap a box to place it.

Hint

Homologous: same bones, different jobs. Analogous: same job, different build. Vestigial: a reduced part with little or no use today.

Question 29 of 36

Suppose several rainy years follow the drought. Plants with small, soft seeds become plentiful again, and large, hard seeds become rare. Finches with shallower beaks can pick up and eat small seeds faster than finches with deep beaks. What would most likely happen to the finch population over the next several generations?

Answer choices
Hint

Natural selection favors whatever trait works best in the current environment. Which beaks would help most now?

Whales With Legs

Whales live their whole lives in water, but they are mammals: they breathe air, are warm-blooded and nurse their young. Paleontologists hypothesize that whales evolved from four-legged mammals that lived on land. The table summarizes several fossil animals and modern whales. Ages are approximate.

AnimalAge (millions of years ago)Description
Pakicetus50Four legs; lived on land near water; ear bones shaped like those of modern whales
Ambulocetus49Four short legs and large feet; lived both on land and in water
Rodhocetus47Short hind legs; probably swam using its tail and legs
Basilosaurus40Lived only in water; tiny hind legs that could not support its body
Modern whalesTodayNo hind legs; small pelvic and leg bones inside the body, not attached to the spine

Which discovery, if confirmed, would most weaken the hypothesis that whales evolved from four-legged land mammals?

Answer choices
Hint

The hypothesis predicts an order in time: legged ancestors first, legless whales later. Which finding would break that order?

Question 31 of 36

Comparing Primate DNA

Scientists compared long stretches of DNA from humans and several other primates. The table shows the approximate percent of DNA bases that differ between humans and each species.

After two groups split from a common ancestor, small changes build up in each group's DNA slowly and fairly steadily. So fewer differences suggest a more recent common ancestor.

SpeciesDNA difference from humans (%)
Chimpanzee1.2
Gorilla1.6
Orangutan3.1
Rhesus macaque (a monkey)7.0

A student uses only the data in the table to draw a cladogram of the five primates (human, chimpanzee, gorilla, orangutan and rhesus macaque). Which feature should the cladogram have?

Answer choices
Hint

The species with the most DNA differences from humans split from the human line earliest, so it branches off lowest on the cladogram.

A museum visitor says, "If humans evolved from chimpanzees, why are there still chimpanzees?" Based on the passage, which response best corrects the visitor's misunderstanding?

Answer choices
Hint

Re-read the passage: what does a small DNA difference suggest the two species share?

Question 33 of 36

Which additional finding would provide the strongest evidence that the lizards on Island A and Island B have become separate species?

Answer choices
Hint

Recall the biological definition of a species. Which finding is about the ability to interbreed, not just about looks or habits?

Question 34 of 36

Two populations of tree frogs live in the same ponds. Frogs in Population 1 breed in early spring. Frogs in Population 2 breed in late spring, about six weeks later, so in nature the two populations almost never mate with each other. When scientists bring males and females from the two populations together in a lab, they can still mate and produce healthy offspring.

Which statement best describes what could happen to these populations over many generations?

Answer choices
Hint

The populations share the same ponds, so there is no physical barrier. What else can keep their genes from mixing?

Question 35 of 36

A hospital official claims: "Our 2014 program caused the rise in antibiotic resistance to slow down." Which statement best evaluates this claim?

Answer choices
Hint

Did resistance keep rising after 2014, and how fast? Then ask: does the study include anything to compare with, such as a hospital without the program?

Question 36 of 36

The Mexican tetra is a small fish. Populations that live in rivers have working eyes and silver-gray skin. Several populations that live in completely dark caves have no working eyes and almost no skin color. Genetic studies show that the cave populations descended from river fish that entered the caves long ago.

A student claims: "Evolution always makes organisms more complex by adding new structures." Which statement best evaluates the student's claim?

Answer choices
Hint

Did the cave populations gain new structures or lose existing ones? Does that fit the word "always"?
