This full-length practice test is built like the real GED® Reasoning Through Language Arts test. Treat it like test day: find a quiet place, put your phone away and let the timer run.

  • 47 items in three timed sections, about 2½ hours (150 minutes) in total. Each section has its own timer, and unused time does not carry over to the next section.
  • Section 1: Reading and Language (35 minutes, questions 1–19). Read a workplace safety memo, a short story and two edited workplace documents. Some questions ask you to choose the correct word or sentence from a drop-down menu inside an edited document.
  • Section 2: Extended Response (45 minutes, 1 essay). Read two argument texts about a four-day school week, then type an essay that analyzes which position is better supported by evidence. Plan, write and save a few minutes to proofread. You cannot return to Section 1 once you begin this section.
  • 10-minute break. After the essay, you may take an optional 10-minute break. The timer for Section 3 starts when you return.
  • Section 3: Reading and Language (60 minutes, questions 21–47). A history article, a paired argument, a personal finance article, a short story and another edited document.
  • Question types include multiple choice, drop-down, drag-and-drop and select-all. There is no penalty for guessing, so answer every question.
  • Paragraphs are numbered so you can find the evidence a question refers to. Use Flag for review to return to questions within the same section.
  • Pace yourself: about 1½ minutes per question in Sections 1 and 3, including reading time.

When you finish, you will see your score, the correct answers and a full explanation for every question. The essay comes with a scoring guide and a model 6-point response so you can score your own work.
