This practice test is built like the real GED® Reasoning Through Language Arts test.
- About 2½ hours in total (150 minutes), in three timed sections. Each section has its own timer, and unused time does not carry over to the next section.
- Section 1 (35 minutes): reading and language. You will read a workplace memo, community documents and a short story, and answer questions about them. You will also choose the correct words in drop-down menus to fix errors in edited documents.
- Section 2 (45 minutes): Extended Response. You will read two short argument texts and type an essay that analyzes which side is better supported. You cannot return to Section 1 once you begin this section.
- 10-minute break. After the essay, you may take an optional 10-minute break. The timer for Section 3 starts when you return.
- Section 3 (60 minutes): reading and language. More passages, paired texts and edited documents.
- Question types include multiple choice, drop-down, drag-and-drop and select-all. There is no penalty for guessing, so answer every question.
- Each passage appears with its questions. Paragraphs are numbered so you can find the evidence a question refers to. Use Flag for review to return to questions within the same section.
- Pace yourself: about 1½ minutes per question in Sections 1 and 3, including reading time.
When you finish, you will see your score, the correct answers and a full explanation for every question. The essay comes with a scoring guide and a model 6-point response so you can score your own work.
The timer keeps running if you leave the page, just like on the real test.
