Pregunta 1 de 10 · Energía: conservación, transformación y flujo
The Electromagnetic Spectrum
Light is only one small part of a much larger family of waves called the electromagnetic (EM) spectrum. All EM waves travel at the same speed in empty space, about 3.0 \times 10^8 meters per second. Unlike sound, they do not need a medium (matter) to travel through, so they can cross the vacuum of space. That is how energy from the Sun reaches Earth.
The waves differ in wavelength (the distance from one crest to the next) and frequency (how many waves pass a point each second). The diagram below shows the order of the bands.
For any wave, speed equals frequency times wavelength. Because all EM waves have the same speed, a wave with a higher frequency must have a shorter wavelength. Higher-frequency EM waves also carry more energy, which is why ultraviolet light can damage skin cells while radio waves pass through our bodies harmlessly.
Space between the Sun and Earth is almost a perfect vacuum, yet infrared and visible light from the Sun warm Earth's surface.
Which statement from the passage best explains how this energy reaches Earth?
Pista
Conduction and convection both need particles of matter. What makes EM waves different?
Solución paso a paso
Evidence: The passage states that EM waves "do not need a medium (matter) to travel through, so they can cross the vacuum of space. That is how energy from the Sun reaches Earth."
Step by step:
- Conduction needs particles touching each other; a vacuum has almost no particles.
- Convection needs a moving liquid or gas; there is none to carry heat across space.
- Radiation is energy carried by electromagnetic waves, which need no matter.
- So sunlight and infrared reach Earth by radiation, exactly as the passage says.
The answer is "They do not need a medium (matter) to travel through, so they can cross the vacuum of space."
Tip: When a question asks you to "explain" with the passage, find the sentence that gives a cause, not one that is merely true. All EM waves having the same speed is true, but it does not explain how they cross a vacuum.
Paso a paso:
